Global Survey Reveals Backsliding on Women’s Rights and Democratic Freedoms

Women’s rights organization, Equality Now, has released a report highlighting a concerning trend in the deterioration of human rights globally, especially regarding gender equality and democratic freedoms. This development comes three decades after the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a landmark agreement aimed at advancing women’s rights.

The report underscores a global pattern where legal mechanisms are deliberately utilized to sustain patriarchal structures and undermine gender equality. This trend has been prominently observed in the domain of reproductive rights, with significant restrictions occurring in nations like Poland, several Latin American countries, and notably in the US following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Such actions are alleged to contravene the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), particularly Article 16(e), which affirms the rights of individuals to make autonomous decisions about their reproductive lives.

Moreover, the report criticizes legislations targeting LGBTQ+ communities, highlighting Russia’s “anti-propaganda” laws, Uganda’s severe penalties for same-sex relationships, and the increasing restrictions in the US on gender-affirming healthcare. These measures are said to breach international commitments such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which ensures equal legal protection and prohibits discrimination on various grounds.

The NGO warns of a critical juncture, emphasizing that the world’s commitment to upholding the Beijing Platform’s agenda for gender equality requires steadfast political will. The latest report serves not only as a reflection on current setbacks but also as a “Call to Action” for the global community to renew their efforts toward achieving comprehensive legal equality.
