The recent actions by the Trump administration have drawn sharp criticism from international quarters, especially from UN human rights expert Margaret Satterthwaite. On Friday, Satterthwaite publicly condemned the substantial purges within the US Department of Justice. These removals have notably targeted officials involved in the criminal investigations of President Donald Trump, as well as those connected to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Satterthwaite highlighted several actions as particularly troubling. These included the reassignments, transfers, and dismissals of legal professionals from sensitive cases, the creation of a task force dedicated to scrutinizing the performance of enforcement officials, and impeachment attempts against federal judges who handed down unfavorable rulings. Satterthwaite lamented that such steps might represent the opening chapter in a larger strategy to replace existing professionals with individuals aligned with the administration’s interests.
The expert called upon the US government to “stop its interference” and cease political retribution against Department of Justice officials. Of particular concern to Satterthwaite was the Weaponization Working Group, a body suggesting an ongoing review of civil and criminal actions from the last four years. This initiative is feared to potentially be a mechanism for targeting political adversaries of the Trump administration.
Since President Trump’s assumption of office in late January, the administration has aggressively pursued changes to the federal workforce. Notably, this has included the firing of Justice Department employees linked to Trump investigations, the weakening of administrative law judge job protections, and a spate of resignations prompted by these measures. In stark contrast, the administration has also granted pardons to over a thousand individuals involved in the Capitol event, some of whom were participants in the “Stop the Steal” rally.
In February, the US Senate confirmed Kash Patel as the new FBI Director despite concerns about a potential campaign targeting Trump administration opponents. Margaret Satterthwaite, a Special Rapporteur appointed by the UN Human Rights Council, monitors the independence of judges and lawyers. Though not salaried, her role within the Special Procedure Group is crucial in observing and recommending actions to the Human Rights Council.
