Australian Law Firms Increasingly Turn to Partner Teams for Growth in 2024, Study Finds

In an analysis conducted by recruitment firm Major Lindsey & Africa, data revealed an upward trend in Australian law firms hiring teams of partners. This strategy is employed to ensure that partners bring their client workload with them, enhancing the firm’s business prospects. Among the 193 lateral partner moves within the top 50 commercial law firms in Australia during 2024, there were at least 22 instances where a team of two or more partners relocated together. Tom Stretton, the Sydney-based managing director of Major Lindsey & Africa’s partner practice group, highlighted that this trend reflects a principle of “safety in numbers” benefiting both the moving teams and the hiring firms.
