UN Human Rights Chief Criticizes Israel’s Airstrikes in Gaza Amid Rising Civilian Casualties

The United Nations Human Rights Chief, Volker Tϋrk, has voiced apprehension over Israel’s recent military actions in Gaza, which have resulted in significant civilian fatalities and injuries. As per a statement released on X (formerly Twitter), numerous airstrikes have taken place, culminating in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians and straining an already precarious humanitarian situation.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF), in their defense, have stated that their military operations were focused on terror targets linked to Palestinian Islamic Jihad organizations in Gaza. They emphasize that their strikes were intended to neutralize terrorist cells and military installations across the region. However, according to Gaza’s health ministry, the airstrikes have resulted in at least 404 deaths and over 562 injuries, placing immense pressure on local hospitals and medical units.

Tϋrk’s statement underscores a call for all involved parties to cease hostilities and pursue peace. He criticizes the continuation of military force by Israel, warning it will exacerbate the plight of a Palestinian population already enduring severe adversities. The ongoing blockade by Israel on Gaza, noted since the January ceasefire deal, is further intensifying the humanitarian crisis, restricting essential aid and access.

UN Under-Secretary-General Tom Fletcher, addressing the UN Security Council, remarked that the cessation of the brief ceasefire has regressed any modest improvements that had been made, urging the international community to oppose the blockade on humanitarian grounds as discussed. This aligns with warnings from UN agencies highlighting the detrimental impact of Israel’s land annexations and demolitions of Palestinian homes, which violate international law.

The International Court of Justice ruled in July 2024 that Israel’s practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory amounted to annexation, infringing upon Palestinian territorial integrity and their right to self-determination. These actions are firmly against international conventions that protect such rights as elucidated here.

The situation is further compounded by accusations from the International Criminal Court against Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who have been alleged to have committed crimes against humanity. Among the charges are the starvation of civilians as a method of warfare and intentional attacks on civilian populations which are detailed in court findings.
