Amnesty International Condemns EU for Failing to Address Israeli Actions in Gaza – Calls for Stronger Accountability Measures

Amnesty International has voiced its strong disapproval of the European Union’s recent stance concerning Israel’s actions in Gaza, branding it as a “shameful attempt” to justify acts they classify as genocide and war crimes against Palestinians. This criticism came shortly after the European Council issued a statement expressing regret over developments in Gaza but failed to specify Israel’s role in the conflict.

The European Council’s statement, primarily urging Hamas to release hostages, notably omitted any mention of the over 4,000 Palestinians reportedly detained in Israel without any charges or trial, which Amnesty International highlighted through an early March report.

Amnesty International’s European Institutions Office Director, Eve Geddie, expressed concern that the EU’s selective condemnation does not align with its professed commitment to international law. The organization asserts that this approach exemplifies selective compassion, focusing on victims’ national identities rather than their humanitarian situations. Furthermore, an extensive report from Amnesty documented attacks on infrastructure and civilians, suggesting these could count as genocidal acts.

Adding to the complexity of the issue, the International Court of Justice previously determined that Israel has breached certain international obligations. In a July 2024 ruling, the court emphasized that these obligations are of global concern and insisted on Israel’s responsibility to cease its illegal presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

The UN has also voiced concerns about the humanitarian impact of continued military actions, warning that further use of force by Israel is likely to exacerbate the dire conditions faced by the Palestinian populace, as articulated by the UN human rights chief.

Amnesty’s sharp rebuke highlights ongoing tensions between international human rights advocates and both the EU’s and Israel’s policy decisions in the region, raising profound questions about accountability and humanitarian priorities on the global stage.
