Rev Acquires SmartDepo to Advance AI Innovations in Legal Tech Sector

In a significant development for the legal tech sector, Rev, renowned for its advanced speech-to-text technology, has acquired SmartDepo, a leader in AI-powered deposition summaries. This acquisition aligns two companies with a commitment to quality, accuracy, and efficiency for their legal clientele, benefiting law firms and court reporting agencies by automating the labor-intensive process of reviewing and organizing testimonies.

SmartDepo, founded in 2023 by a civil rights lawyer, is distinguished for its ability to deliver detailed deposition summaries complete with page-line citations that are indispensable for legal professionals. These functionalities enable rapid access and precise citation bracketing crucial for court documents. With a patent-pending AI, SmartDepo cuts down on time by generating summaries within minutes, and not days, employing a ‘human-in-the-loop’ method to ensure maximum accuracy.

Isaac Manoff, Esq., CEO and Co-Founder of SmartDepo, highlighted the growing demand and impact of AI tools within the legal industry, emphasizing their alignment with Rev, another company focused on precision and quality in AI solutions. SmartDepo devises its tools specifically for legal applications, mitigating the potential errors and inefficiencies of generic AI summarization tools. Meanwhile, Rev achieves exceptional transcription accuracy, even in challenging audio conditions, by leveraging its massive compilation of human speech data processed over years. Their technology is reportedly 60% more accurate than other major players in the market.

Following the acquisition, SmartDepo’s co-founder, Ely Cohn, will become the General Manager of SmartDepo, ensuring seamless service for existing clients and continued growth in its offerings. Isaac Manoff will remain an advisor during the transition. This move strengthens Rev’s capabilities as a comprehensive AI service provider, enabling legal professionals to streamline their workflow from deposition recording to obtaining precise, citation-ready summaries all through a single platform.

Rev’s founder, Jason Chicola, underscored the transaction as a step toward becoming the preferred AI partner for legal professionals. By combining the strengths of both companies, they aim to enhance efficiency, reduce practitioner fatigue, and support superior client outcomes. More broadly, this acquisition places both Rev and SmartDepo on the frontier of the evolving landscape of legal AI solutions, offering progressive, precise tools tailored specifically for the legal services market.
