In recent developments within the realm of legal technology, Factor has unveiled its “GenAI in Legal Benchmarking Report 2025”, a comprehensive study delving into the adoption of generative AI (GenAI) within corporate legal departments. This study, sourced from more than 120 in-house legal teams, sheds light on the current landscape of AI integration in legal settings, emphasizing both the hindrances and pathways to successful implementation.
One of the report’s noteworthy insights is the disparity between AI access and its effective utilization. Although a significant 61.2% of legal departments offer AI access to members, a significant portion—33.7%—of legal professionals express a lack of confidence in utilizing these enterprise AI tools efficiently, underlining the need for enhanced support and training. Furthermore, a substantial 29.6% of departments maintain AI deployment within constrained pilot groups, which could be a limiting factor in realizing AI’s full potential across the board.
Another critical element highlighted by the report is the ‘leadership minority’ phenomenon. Merely 12.1% of the legal teams surveyed claim to be at the forefront of GenAI adoption, while a majority remain at an average (35.4%) or lagging behind (26.3%) in terms of progress. This underscores a significant opportunity for advancement in AI integration across the legal sector.
In terms of AI development strategies, the benchmarking report unveiled a near-even split in preference for building in-house AI interfaces versus procuring specialized legal AI tools, with 47.5% of teams opting for the former and 40.4% for the latter. This split highlights different tactical approaches towards embracing artificial intelligence within legal operations.
The complete report is available for those interested in a more detailed exploration of these insights. This includes an extended analysis of current adoption patterns, data-driven benchmarking, and strategic recommendations for legal departments navigating the ongoing AI transformation journey.
David Mainiero, Vice President of AI Enablement and Legal Transformation at Factor, remarked on the technological bets that legal departments often have to make, noting the potential volatility in investments where the technological landscape can rapidly change.
For those eager to delve further into strategies for effective GenAI implementation in the legal sector, Factor is hosting a webinar featuring industry experts, including LegalTech & AI Consultant Peter Duffy and GSK’s Kelly Clay, on April 9th. More details on the webinar can be found here.
As legal departments look towards modernizing operations with AI, this report serves as both a benchmark and a guide, identifying gaps as well as successful strategies necessary for maximizing the efficiency and business value that AI can offer.
