Trump Administration’s Title IX Special Unit Targets Gender Policies in Education

The Trump administration has announced the formation of a Title IX Special Investigations Team (SIT) to tackle what it describes as “gender ideology” in school programs. Title IX, a key provision from the Education Amendments of 1972, prohibits sex-based discrimination in federally funded educational programs. This new initiative reflects the administration’s focus on reinterpreting Title IX protections in line with Executive Orders 14201 and 14168, which limit the participation of transgender individuals in specific school activities and emphasize the interpretation of gender as biological sex.

The SIT team will be composed of members from the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, the Department of Education, and the Federal Student Aid Enforcement Office. The initiative aims to expedite Title IX investigations, traditionally known for their long duration, as outlined by Education Secretary Linda McMahon. She emphasized the priority of ensuring rapid and consistent investigations to uphold what the administration sees as women’s civil rights against policies permitting men to participate in women’s sports or use women’s facilities.

These actions are part of a broader effort by President Trump to reshape existing gender policies in the United States. Since taking office, he has signed executive orders that ban transgender individuals from military service and restrict gender-affirming care, among other measures. Notably, funds have been cut from programs that are perceived to promote gender ideology, according to previous announcements at major rallies and other public statements.
