California’s state bar has recently come under scrutiny for utilizing recycled and AI-generated questions in the February bar exam. In an email addressed to exam applicants on Monday night, it was revealed that the California Supreme Court justices were unaware of this reliance on artificial intelligence until they saw the email themselves. The disclosure has raised further questions about the exam’s validity, following previous concerns over technical and administrative issues.
Of the 171 multiple-choice questions included in the exam, 100 were composed by Kaplan Exam Services. This collaboration follows a five-year, $8.25 million agreement with Kaplan to develop test questions. The integration of AI in crafting exam content continues to be a polarizing topic within the legal education community, as it challenges the traditional methods and metrics of evaluating future legal professionals.
