Shopify Inc., the Canadian e-commerce powerhouse, has notably increased the compensation for its General Counsel, Jessica Hertz, by 50%, bringing it to an impressive $13.4 million in 2024. This substantial change comes as the company prepares for a significant expansion, marking the listing of its United States headquarters in New York for the first time. Hertz’s elevated compensation was revealed in a recent 10-K filing by Shopify.
Jessica Hertz has been with Shopify since 2021. Before joining the company, she served for nearly a year as Staff Secretary in President Joe Biden’s White House and held various roles within the Obama administration. Prior to her governmental work, Hertz was associated with the law firm Jenner & Block and later served as a Regulatory Affairs Counsel at Facebook’s parent company, Meta.
This increase in Hertz’s pay package is seen as a strategic move by Shopify, as the company continues to expand its footprint in the American market. This decision underscores Shopify’s commitment to strengthening its leadership team, particularly as it navigates the complexities of establishing a headquarters in one of the most competitive business landscapes in the world.
