Paul Hastings Defends TotalEnergies in Controversial East African Oil Pipeline Case

The law firm Paul Hastings is currently representing TotalEnergies, a major European energy corporation, in a legal case concerning the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). This $5 billion initiative has come under sharp scrutiny for alleged human rights violations and environmental risks. The pipeline stretches 1,443 kilometers from Uganda to the Tanga Region in Tanzania. Initially slated for completion in 2025, the project has experienced delays due to financial obstacles, opposition from local communities and advocacy groups, and ongoing legal proceedings. TotalEnergies is a significant stakeholder, holding 62% of the project, while other stakeholders include Uganda National Oil Company, Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation, and China National Offshore Oil Corporation. Additional firms, including Clifford Chance and Dentons, are reportedly involved in advising on transactions related to EACOP. For more details, visit the original article.
