South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal has ruled to allow a $4.2 billion bribery case involving Johannesburg-based MTN to move forward. The court rejected jurisdictional defenses in the complex telecoms case that also involves Iran. MTN is represented by Webber Wentzel and Werksmans Attorneys, while the Netherlands-based East Asian Consortium (EAC), an affiliate of Turkcell, is advised by Honey Attorney and Vasco De Oliveira. EAC alleges that MTN bribed Iranian and South African officials to block Turkcell from securing Iran’s first GSM mobile license, resulting in more than $4 billion in damages due to the loss of the license.
