India Opens Doors to Foreign Lawyers, Signaling Legal Market Transformation

In a significant shift for the Indian legal landscape, the Bar Council of India has released amended regulations that open the country’s legal market to foreign lawyers and law firms. According to the updated India Rules for Registration and Regulation of Foreign Lawyers and Foreign Law Firms in India, 2022, international legal professionals will now be permitted to establish offices within India. They will engage in various corporate legal activities, including joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, and related transactional work on a reciprocal basis. The regulations also authorize these entities to represent clients in arbitration cases conducted in the country.
