India Opens Legal Market to Foreign Lawyers as Bar Council Enacts New Regulations

The Bar Council of India has enacted new regulations allowing foreign lawyers and law firms to establish offices in India. These firms will be able to engage in corporate legal matters, including joint ventures and mergers and acquisitions, on a reciprocal basis. They will also be permitted to represent clients in arbitration cases within the country. This development follows the updated India Rules for Registration and Regulation of Foreign Lawyers and Foreign Law Firms in India, 2022, and the rules come into effect immediately upon publication in the Official Gazette. This move is welcomed by local lawyers, marking a significant liberalization of India’s legal market. For more details, the full article can be accessed here.
