Mary Jo White Stresses the Critical Need for Independence in the Justice System

Mary Jo White, former U.S. Attorney and Securities and Exchange Commission Chair, emphasized the importance of maintaining independence from Main Justice at a recent reception. Her discussion with Danielle Sassoon, former acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, opened the New York City Bar’s White Collar Crime Institute. White noted that while the challenge of maintaining independence is more difficult in current times, it has always been a crucial issue for the justice system.

During their conversation, White shared with Sassoon that independence is “something you have to preserve. Because if you lose it, you could not get it back.” This dialogue highlights the continued relevance of independence within the prosecutorial and regulatory landscape.
