In a recent strategic move, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has divested his stake in Cantor Fitzgerald, a prominent Wall Street business group, transferring ownership to his children and private investors. The legal intricacies of this transaction were overseen by Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, a firm renowned for its expertise in corporate law and mergers and acquisitions.
David K. Lam, Wachtell’s corporate partner and co-chair of its M&A practice, led the team handling this high-profile divestiture. The firm’s experience with Cantor Fitzgerald is well-established, having previously advised on the company’s notable 2017 transaction involving the sale of Berkeley Point Financial LLC to BGC Partners.
Prior to this divestiture, Lutnick had been at the helm of Cantor Fitzgerald for three decades until taking office in the Trump administration. With this transition of ownership, the company continues to maintain a connection to the Lutnick family while also opening avenues for private outside investment.
