UN Warns of Plankton Decline as Climate Challenges Intensify Ahead of Ocean Conference

The United Nations has voiced concern over a significant decline in oceanic plankton, urging immediate global action to stave off far-reaching impacts on ecosystems, climate stability, and food security. This comes ahead of the impending UN Ocean Conference in Nice, which aims to address various marine environmental challenges (UN News).

Recent studies from the Villefranche Oceanography Laboratory (LOV) highlight a troubling increase in surface sea temperatures in the Mediterranean, rising by about 1.5 degrees Celsius over the past fifty years. This warming trend has been linked to a substantial decline in phytoplankton populations, which are crucial not only for absorbing carbon dioxide but also for producing over half of the Earth’s oxygen.

Lionel Guidi, a marine researcher at LOV, expressed concern about a general reduction in phytoplankton primary production, warning that this threatens the ocean’s biological pump, potentially diminishing its role as a moderating force in the global climate system.

The decline of phytoplankton, forming the basis of the marine food web, raises alarm as it impacts zooplankton, fish populations, and larger marine predators. Moreover, it reduces the ocean’s capacity to sequester carbon, thereby accelerating the pace of global warming (JURIST).

This latest warning on plankton decline parallels the UN’s prior call for international efforts to prevent global glacier loss. UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed recently described climate change’s adverse effects on glaciers as a “mortal blow.” The loss of glaciers, which have discharged 9,000 gigatons of ice since 1975, exacerbates water scarcity and climate-related disasters (JURIST – Glacier Loss).

The concurrent crises involving the decline of oceanic plankton and melting glaciers highlight a rapidly intensifying climate emergency. Both ecosystems play pivotal roles in planetary temperature regulation and support essential life forms. Without comprehensive emissions reductions, effective monitoring systems, and evidence-based policy interventions, the consequences could become irreversible (UN News – Climate Emergency).

Guidi, preparing to present research findings at the UN Ocean Conference, stressed the importance of sustained scientific observation. “We don’t make policy,” he noted. “But we provide the evidence. These aren’t opinions—they’re facts.”
