Harvey Weinstein Guilty in Sexual Assault Case as Jury Deliberations Continue on Rape Charge

On June 11, 2025, Harvey Weinstein was found guilty on one count of sexual assault in New York, while the jury acquitted him on a separate charge of sexual assault. The jury, composed of seven men and five women, deliberated for five days before delivering this mixed verdict, and they are expected to continue discussions on an outstanding rape charge. This conviction involves allegations that Weinstein forced oral sex on former production assistant Miriam Haley, an accusation that mirrors his 2020 trial, which resulted in a similar conviction.

However, the jury acquitted Weinstein on charges brought by Kaja Sokola, a model who alleged that he forced oral sex on her when she was an aspiring actress. Sokola did not testify in Weinstein’s initial trial. In light of the partial verdict, Sokola’s attorney, Lindsay Goldbrum, described it as a “step toward justice” but acknowledged it as incomplete. Meanwhile, deliberations are ongoing regarding a charge of rape involving former aspiring actress Jessica Mann, who had previously accused Weinstein in the 2020 trial.

This trial was viewed by many as a barometer for the current standing of the #MeToo movement. Allegations against Weinstein had been pivotal in propelling the movement to prominence, yet this mixed outcome does not deliver a clear message about the movement’s enduring impact. Previously, Weinstein’s 2020 conviction was overturned by New York’s highest court, determining that he was denied a fair trial due to the inclusion of testimonies that did not directly pertain to the charges at hand.

The trial was marked by tensions among jurors, as evident in their deliberation communications. Notes were sent indicating clashes within the group, with jurors reporting being “attacked” or shunned by colleagues, ultimately culminating in consensus on two of the three charges. The jury has been scheduled to reconvene on Thursday to resolve the remaining rape charge.

Currently, Weinstein, 73, who has been in a wheelchair and is stated to have cancer, awaits this next phase while housed in a hospital prison ward. In addition to his current deliberations, he is also appealing a 16-year sentence in California. For further details, check the full article.
