Former Disney Legal Chief Challenges State Farm Over Wildfire Response in California

Merritt Farren, a former general counsel of both Disneyland and Audible, has taken notable legal action against State Farm over its response to the January Pacific Palisades wildfire. The catastrophic event that destroyed over 9,400 structures in a 22-square-mile area also claimed Farren’s home. Farren has argued that the emergency interim rate hike granted to State Farm, approved by California’s current regulatory process, is “fundamentally flawed.” According to Farren, the rate increases do not account for the actual treatment received by insured customers in the event of such disasters.

As reported by Corporate Counsel, Farren criticized the giant insurer, suggesting it seeks “to reduce its exposure by frustrating insureds to a point of surrender.” The litigation and subsequent media attention reflect increasing scrutiny over how large insurers manage their responsibilities and insurance claims following large-scale natural disasters.
