3M Sues Three Lawyers for Alleged Black Lung Fraud in New Racketeering Case

3M Co. has taken legal action against three attorneys, filing a racketeering case that accuses them of submitting fraudulent claims related to black lung disease on behalf of coal miners. The lawsuit targets the conduct of Glenn Hammond in Kentucky, Johnny Givens in Mississippi, and Mike Martin in Texas, alleging that these actions “far exceeded the bounds of lawful, zealous advocacy,” as reported in 3M’s RICO suit. With claims of falsified statements dispersed among 850 cases filed across six counties in Eastern Kentucky, 3M’s allegations are part of a broader scrutiny into legal practices.

This lawsuit follows a similar case filed by Ford Motor Co. against lemon law attorneys, hinting at a possible trend of heightened legal accountability within the industry. Mike Martin, one of the accused lawyers, countered the allegations as being “manufactured and based upon a false narrative” and classified them as defamatory. These developments could mark significant ramifications for legal professionals handling similar claims.
