In the wake of Israel’s recent airstrike on the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) headquarters, press freedom advocates are calling for accountability and heightened protection measures for journalists worldwide. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has strongly condemned the attack carried out during ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran. Sara Qudah, the CPJ’s Regional Director, has expressed grave concerns over the actions taken while Iranian state media was delivering a live broadcast.
The international community has scrutinized this incident amid tensions, especially as Israeli fighter jets targeted the broadcasting headquarters when anchor Sahar Emami was on air. Emami reportedly had to flee the set as the building sustained damage from the explosion, which was captured live on air. Tragically, journalists Nima Rajabpour and Masoumeh Azimi lost their lives in the attack, while several others faced injuries.
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) justified the airstrike by claiming that the complex was being used by the Iranian Armed Forces for military purposes, despite its guise as a civilian media outlet. This was preceded by an evacuation warning for the Tehran district housing the IRIB offices, an area home to hundreds of thousands of residents.
In contrast, Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei, have condemned the strike as a “wicked act of war,” while IRIB Director Peyman Jebelli has stressed that the facility posed no military threat. Jebelli pointed out a pattern of targeting media institutions during Israeli military operations in the region. The full original report of these statements can be accessed here.
The situation has drawn attention from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which has urged Israel to adhere to the principles of international law and respect Iran’s sovereignty. This episode has put into focus the risks faced by media personnel in conflict zones and has been identified by the CPJ as marking the deadliest period for journalists in recent memory.
