The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has publicly condemned the violence occurring at food distribution sites in Gaza. The OHCHR denounced the ‘repeated incidents’ of ‘senseless killings’ of Palestinians by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), documented in a recent statement released on Wednesday.
According to the OHCHR, the IDF’s use of lethal force against Palestinians seeking food aid is a blatant violation of international law, which mandates that civilians must not be targeted or restricted from accessing life-sustaining resources. The report indicates that over the past week, numerous Palestinians have been shot while attempting to collect food, resulting in 51 fatalities and 200 injuries on June 17. Similar incidents occurred on June 16, with at least three people killed under comparable circumstances. Cumulatively, more than 400 Palestinian lives have been lost since May 27 due to IDF shelling targeted at those seeking humanitarian assistance.
The OHCHR has reiterated that weaponizing food and restricting access to essential services in conflict zones is a war crime. The UN has previously determined Israel’s actions against Palestinians have characteristics consistent with genocide under the UN’s Genocide Convention. Hence, Israel is legally obligated to ensure that aid reaches Gaza without impediment, an obligation it has not only failed to meet but actively undermined.
Echoing these concerns, the UN World Food Program (WFP) issued its own statement, emphasizing that a significant increase in food aid is crucial to stabilize the situation and assure the Gazan population that more aid is forthcoming. The WFP has highlighted that due to Israeli blockades, only a small fraction of necessary food provisions—9,000 metric tons—has been distributed in a territory with 2.1 million residents, which is insufficient to meet the needs of the population.
