UN Rights Chief Raises Alarm Over Escalating Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan Amid Rising Violence and Abuses

The deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan has drawn significant international concern as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, calls for immediate action. Türk’s concerns center around escalating violence in Sudan’s North Darfur and Kordofan regions, where hostilities between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have intensified, with reports of civilian casualties and human rights abuses becoming more frequent.

Türk warned of the conflict’s catastrophic consequences for civilians, highlighting recent incidents of sexual violence, abductions, and looting in affected areas. He has urged all parties to facilitate safe passage for civilians in conflict zones, such as El Fasher, Al Debibat, and El Obeid, stressing, “Civilians must be protected at all costs,” as outlined in a statement on the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights website.

The RSF has been involved in further aggression, such as the renewed offensive launched in June to control El Fasher. This development follows serious allegations, including the recruitment of child soldiers and attacks on internally displaced persons, as the Sudan Tribune reports. Earlier incidents include an attack on the Zamzam camp, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention to prevent further violations.

The crisis has also severely impacted humanitarian aid, and with international aid operations largely suspended, over 10.7 million people have been displaced within the country. This marks Sudan as having the world’s most significant internally displaced population. Moreover, the situation is exacerbated by recent international humanitarian law violations by both SAF and RSF, underscoring Türk’s call for comprehensive investigations into these allegations and holding the perpetrators accountable. Detailed reports on these accusations can be found in the JURIST articles.

In light of these developments, Türk, alongside UN academics and experts, continues to advocate for the global community to step up its efforts in addressing these urgent humanitarian and human rights challenges facing Sudan today.
