FTV Capital’s Strategic Investment Signals Transformation in Legal Tech Market

Earlier this week, FTV Capital announced its strategic investment in ProfitSolv, a company that operates several law practice management platforms including CosmoLex, Orion, Rocket Matter, and Tabs3. Although the financial details were not disclosed, the investment was described as significant. Adam Hallquist, a principal at FTV Capital, provided insights into the firm’s vision for the legal tech space during a detailed interview.

Hallquist, whose father is a lawyer, leveraged his personal insights and experiences to guide the investment. He emphasizes the large portion of the legal market that remains “unvended”—a term referring to firms not yet utilizing practice management solutions. Currently, only about 30 to 35% of this market is “vended”. Hallquist sees the substantial unvended segment as a key area for potential growth, estimating an annual increase of $100 to $150 million as more firms adopt digital solutions.

This investment marks a 50-50 partnership with Lightyear Capital, which had been the principal investor in ProfitSolv since its inception in 2020. According to Hallquist, this structure reflects mutual respect and benefits from Lightyear’s extensive experience with ProfitSolv.

FTV Capital intends to focus heavily on financial technology, particularly in modernizing payment processes in the legal industry. Currently, checks remain the dominant payment method, but Hallquist sees significant potential in shifting to ACH and credit card transactions. He draws parallels to FTV’s investments in other sectors, like their success with JustPark in eliminating cash in favor of digital payments.

Addressing the debate over legacy versus cloud computing, Hallquist maintains a pragmatic approach. While cloud platforms represent the future, he acknowledges that many customers will continue to prefer on-premise solutions. Retention rates further support this stance, with about 95% of customers sticking to current solutions once implemented.

On expansion, Hallquist reveals that ProfitSolv is open to additional acquisitions, viewing them as growth avenues to enhance offerings and market reach. He also highlights emerging opportunities for improving law practice management through new technologies, including AI.

FTV Capital’s growth-oriented strategy is set to guide ProfitSolv through an aggressive agenda, supported by FTV Propel, their operational support group. Despite formidable competition in the legal tech market, FTV Capital remains focused on delivering superior, customer-centric products, drawing on best practices from across the tech industry.
