Syrian Rights Group Urges Accountability for Violence Against Peaceful Protesters Amid National Tensions

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) has issued a call for the Syrian government to address and hold accountable those responsible for attacks on peaceful protesters outside the country’s legislative assembly. The SNHR highlighted alarming incidents in Damascus, where civilians assaulted protesters, causing physical injuries and widespread panic among participants, including noted human rights activists. These events have raised serious concerns regarding the response, or lack thereof, from law enforcement officers who were reportedly in close proximity during the attacks.

The SNHR criticized the Syrian authorities’ failure to prosecute those responsible for the violence. This inaction was described as a significant lapse on the part of the government. The group further urged the establishment of an independent complaint mechanism for citizens to report threats and attacks related to activism, a move they believe is critical for ensuring justice and protection for those exercising their rights.

Internationally, the right to peaceful assembly is protected under Article 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). This provision guarantees individuals the freedom to gather peacefully without restrictions unless necessary for public safety. Moreover, the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders obligates states to protect individuals engaged in peaceful protests, ensuring effective protection under national law.

The protests at the People’s Assembly building in Damascus are a response to ongoing violence in Suwayda, a province home to a Druze majority. The situation in Suwayda has drawn international attention following reports of mass killings and forced displacements. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has emphasized the urgent need for accountability and an immediate halt to violence in the region. Since July 12, numerous fatalities have been reported, including unlawful killings and summary executions according to JURIST.

Efforts to address these concerns come amid complex geopolitical challenges facing Syria. The international community has expressed growing alarm over the failure to protect fundamental human rights, calling for more effective measures to safeguard the rights of activists and protestors. These developments highlight the urgent need for reforms within Syria’s transitional government to ensure accountability and uphold democratic freedoms.
