David Sadwick Appointed Chief Counsel for California Department of Toxic Substances Control

In a move underscoring California’s commitment to environmental regulation, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the appointment of David Sadwick as the chief counsel for the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) in late 2024. Sadwick, a seasoned legal professional with a Juris Doctor degree acquired in 1986, brings extensive experience to his new role.

Since joining DTSC’s Office of Legal Counsel in 2021, Sadwick has been instrumental in shaping the office’s strategic legal initiatives and ensuring compliance with California’s rigorous environmental laws. His promotion to chief counsel signals a continuity of leadership focused on addressing hazardous waste management and environmental justice issues across the state.

The DTSC, an essential branch of California’s Environmental Protection Agency, is tasked with overseeing the regulation and safe management of toxic substances throughout the state. Sadwick’s appointment is integral to implementing policies aimed at reducing the environmental impact of hazardous materials. These include enforcing regulatory measures that protect communities, especially those disproportionately affected by environmental hazards.

Sadwick’s elevation to chief counsel at such a critical juncture reflects his deep expertise and commitment to the mission of the DTSC. Under his guidance, the department is expected to continue its rigorous enforcement and policy development concerning toxic substances, ensuring the health and safety of California’s environment and its residents.
