Nigeria is under intense scrutiny following a report by Amnesty International that criticizes the government’s inability to effectively address the human rights crisis in the South-East region. Between January 2021 and June 2023, 1,844 people lost their lives amid numerous alleged abuses against civilians. The ongoing violence underscores the Nigerian authorities’ failure to protect lives and maintain law and order as noted by Amnesty International.
Armed forces and various militant groups have been engaged in lethal confrontations, leading to unlawful killings, torture, and enforced disappearances. Reports indicate that residents and police stations in Imo state have been targeted by unknown armed men, resulting in over 400 deaths in 2019 alone. The Nigerian government attributes these attacks to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), although the organization denies such allegations.
The enforcement of IPOB-imposed stay-at-home orders has further exacerbated the situation. Violent repercussions, including beatings and killings, were inflicted upon those defying the orders, causing school closures and disruption of local markets as documented in accounts by local witnesses. These measures have severely infringed on citizens’ rights to life, security, and freedom of movement, leaving many displaced and unable to return home due to fears of retribution.
Despite the rising humanitarian crisis, the government’s response has been labeled inadequate. Rights organizations have called upon Nigerian authorities to fulfill their obligations under international law and implement measures to curb the violence and investigate the abuses. Previous reports have criticized security forces for their excessive force against IPOB supporters, further fuelling tensions in a region already fraught with conflict.
Nigeria has been embroiled in multiple conflicts, from the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast to violent clashes between herders and farmers. The southeast’s turmoil is emblematic of the broader challenges facing the country, culminating in a climate where human rights are consistently under threat.
