Slovenia Enacts Travel Ban on Israeli PM Netanyahu Amid War Crimes Allegations

In a bold diplomatic move, Slovenia has imposed a travel ban on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This unprecedented action, announced on Thursday, marks Slovenia as the first European Union nation to undertake such a measure against the Israeli leader. According to Slovenia’s government, this decision follows earlier sanctions imposed on two extremist Israeli ministers earlier this year.

Neva Grasic, Slovenia’s Secretary of State at the Foreign Ministry, highlighted on X that proceedings were underway against Netanyahu for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. These proceedings are based on a ruling from the International Court of Justice on July 19, 2024, which found that several Israeli policies and practices violated international humanitarian and human rights laws. Slovenia’s stance sends a decisive message to Israel, emphasizing the expectation for adherence to international courts and humanitarian law, reinforcing Slovenia’s dedication to these principles.

This latest travel ban builds on Slovenia’s historical actions in support of Palestine and international law. In 2024, Slovenia was ahead of its EU counterparts in recognizing Palestine as a state, and in 2025, it became the first EU nation to impose an arms embargo on Israel. Additionally, two Israeli ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, faced travel bans from Slovenia due to their inflammatory rhetoric and alleged incitement of violence against Palestinians.

Being a member of the International Criminal Court, Slovenia has obligations to comply with court directives, which include arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. This travel ban positions Slovenia as one of the first countries committed to enforcing these ICC mandates.

Slovenian Foreign Minister, Tanja Fajon, announced that the Slovenian delegation would abstain from attending Netanyahu’s address at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly set for Friday. This move underscores Slovenia’s resolute adherence to its foreign policy principles.

The broader implications of Slovenia’s actions continue to unfold as the international community closely observes these developments. More insights can be found in the report by JURIST.
