Amnesty International Criticizes Iraq for Continued Persecution of Tishreen Activists Amidst Calls for Justice and Reform

Amnesty International has launched a critical assessment against Iraqi authorities for ongoing persecution of Tishreen activists, six years after the nationwide upheaval. The organization has expressed profound concern over Iraq’s continued failure to ensure accountability for the violent crackdowns that occurred during the Tishreen protests in October 2019. Many activists, especially those involved in these demonstrations, continue to face relentless reprisals including harassment, home raids, and arrests, some charges even carrying the death penalty. This environment of intimidation remains pervasive, as documented in a recent analysis by Amnesty International.

The protests, sparked by grievances against corruption, unemployment, and a lack of public services, saw significant bloodshed. Hundreds of young people were killed or forcibly disappeared. Despite the passage of time, the lack of credible investigations into these crimes has thwarted the hopes for justice and reparations for victims and their families. Razaw Salihy, Iraq Researcher at Amnesty International, commented on the pernicious nature of this impunity, underscoring how it undercuts any chances for truth and reparations.

The chorus of criticism against Iraq’s human rights record grows louder even beyond Amnesty’s findings. Reports from Human Rights Watch in October 2023 highlight similar concerns about enforced disappearances linked to the protests. The suppression of freedom is further exemplified by the shutdown of the news channel Iraq AlHadath earlier this year for addressing sensitive topics, and new amendments to the Iraqi personal status law observed to inadequately protect women’s rights.

As Iraq continues grappling with these domestic challenges, the international community remains vigilant. The ongoing violations not only undermine human rights but also threaten Iraq’s progress towards a democratic and just society. It is increasingly crucial for the Iraqi government to heed these calls for action, ensuring that justice is served, and the rights of its citizens are steadfastly protected.
