Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to Death in Landmark Tribunal Ruling

In a significant judicial decision, a tribunal in Dhaka handed down a death sentence to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her role in quelling student uprisings during the summer of 2024. This ruling, delivered on Monday, also targets her former interior minister. Following the protests, Hasina resigned and took refuge in India.

Judge Golam Mortuza Mozumder, presiding over the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), articulated the verdict by stating Hasina’s guilt on charges of incitement, the order to kill, and failure to take preventative actions against committed atrocities. With this verdict, Bangladesh’s interim government is pressing India to adhere to the extradition treaty to facilitate Hasina’s extradition, emphasizing that providing shelter to the convicted would harm bilateral relations and impede justice. Meanwhile, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs acknowledged the verdict while reaffirming its dedication to the mutual interests of both nations.

Hasina, however, has refuted the tribunal’s decision, describing it as biased and politically targeted against her party, the Awami League. She has voiced her suspicions about the fairness of the trial and urged for the accusations to be addressed by the International Criminal Court. The political landscape has been further complicated by the banning of the Awami League in May by the interim government.

The source of this tumultuous period can be traced back to nationwide protests demanding a reform of a quota system that reserved government positions for war veterans and their kin. According to a UN report, these clashes involving students, security forces, and individuals linked to the Awami League tragically resulted in approximately 1,400 fatalities, along with thousands injured. An interim government was established after Hasina’s resignation on August 8, 2024, with scheduled elections slated for February 2026.

The ramifications of this tribunal’s decision are extensive, affecting the legal and diplomatic fabrics between Bangladesh and India amidst a politically charged environment. These proceedings reflect a complex intertwining of legal judgments and international relations dynamics. More details on the tribunal’s decisions and subsequent actions can be found here.
