The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Development has made an appeal for Germany to enhance its leadership role in championing human rights. Following an observation mission across Berlin, Cottbus, Düsseldorf, and Gelsenkirchen, Surya Deva highlighted both achievements and areas needing improvement within the country’s commitment to inclusivity, sustainability, and human rights.
Germany has been lauded for its significant contributions to foreign aid and climate change mitigation, as well as its efforts to shelter individuals fleeing from conflict zones. Nevertheless, there remain critical improvements to be addressed. Deva emphasized the importance of acknowledging and rectifying historical injustices, notably the genocide of the Nama and Ovaherero peoples in Namibia. He asserted that the German government should take “decisive steps to eliminate discrimination and racism” along with providing reparations and repatriating cultural artifacts that have historical significance (JURIST).
Amid shifting political landscapes, there is growing concern over Germany’s treatment of migrants. Deva highlighted the economic value that migrants could offer if embraced as assets rather than liabilities. He urged the government to ensure that migrants enjoy rights and dignified living conditions in line with international law, emphasizing the urgency of family reunification rights for children.
Further criticisms pointed towards business lobbying practices, which Deva argued are compromising public interest. The call was made for stronger government resilience against such pressures, suggesting that promoting human rights and environmental considerations should be prerequisites for business operations in Germany.
This comprehensive assessment is set to be officially presented to the UN Human Rights Council in September 2026, reflecting an overarching need for Germany to blend its economic strength with a steadfast adherence to human rights principles. Such a move could not only enhance Germany’s internal social fabric but also solidify its position as a global leader in human rights advocacy (UN News).
