UN Security Council Expresses Alarm Over Escalating Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan’s Kordofan Region

The United Nations Security Council has expressed grave concerns over the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Sudan, as the conflict intensifies in the Kordofan region. Recent developments have seen the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) gaining control over critical areas, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing war. During the council’s 10,077th meeting, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Khaled Khiari emphasized the need for concerted international efforts to halt the violence and restore stability to the region.

Khiari confirmed the RSF’s capture of Babanusa in West Kordofan and Heglig in South Kordofan, with neighbouring South Sudanese forces intervening to safeguard vital oil infrastructure in Heglig. The United Nations remains committed to collaborating with international actors to bring an end to the violence, which has persisted for nearly 1,000 days, affecting both the Sudanese population and regional peace.

The director of the Crisis Response Division at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Edem Wosornu, highlighted the acute humanitarian challenges facing the region. He noted that Kordofan has become the epicenter of violence, with recent drone strikes killing over 100 civilians. Notably, a kindergarten and hospital in Kalogi were targeted, resulting in the deaths of at least 89 civilians, including numerous women and children. Wosornu urged the Security Council to unequivocally condemn these actions and ensure that humanitarian workers can access key affected areas safely.

Furthermore, the humanitarian toll is mounting as attacks against healthcare facilities and peacekeepers intensify. The recent assault on a UN logistics base resulted in the deaths of six peacekeepers, and over 1,600 people have been killed in attacks on health facilities this year alone. The crisis extends to the internally displaced persons camp in North Darfur, where reports have documented widespread atrocities, including executions, torture, and systemic sexual violence against civilians.

International calls for action resonate as the need for urgent intervention becomes ever clearer. The situation continues to unfold against a backdrop of complex geopolitical dynamics. The global community is urged to respond decisively to prevent further escalation and provide the necessary humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of millions in Sudan.
