In a significant collaborative effort, leaders from the legal technology sector have joined forces with a broad coalition of legal professionals to advocate for the rule of law through an open letter. This initiative highlights the profession’s commitment to uphold the constitution and safeguard legal and constitutional norms, which they feel are under threat.
The collective message is clear in its urgency, stating, “Today, our profession must speak clearly and firmly.” The letter provides a platform for legal practitioners to add their support and can be accessed by interested parties here.
Among the lead organizers of this effort is Damien Riehl, recognized for his work as a solutions champion at Clio. His involvement is deeply personal as he emphasized the role legal professionals play in standing up for justice, particularly in challenging times. Riehl urged, “History will judge us… If we don’t stand up and be counted, as supporting the rule of law, who will?”
Kara Peterson, cofounder and CEO of Descrybe.ai, also took an active role in spearheading the campaign. She remarked on the intrinsic link between legal tech innovations and the foundational aspects of law, such as legitimacy and judicial accountability, highlighting that without these primary pillars, legal tech advancements lose their relevance.
The open letter, reflecting deep-seated convictions regarding judicial independence and accountability, declares: “We, the undersigned, support and defend the rule of law. We support impartial investigations wherever governmental actions raise credible legal and constitutional questions.” The complete letter, along with further commentary, can be reviewed in the original article here.
