Progressive Prosecutors Unite to Challenge Federal Overreach in Law Enforcement Practices

A coalition of progressive prosecutors has established the Project for the Fight Against Federal Overreach, aiming to hold federal officials accountable when they exceed their lawful authority. This initiative responds to growing concerns over aggressive federal immigration enforcement tactics and recent incidents involving federal agents.

The coalition includes District Attorneys from various jurisdictions:

  • Mary Moriarty (Minneapolis)
  • Larry Krasner (Philadelphia)
  • Jose Garza (Austin, TX)
  • John Creuzot (Dallas, TX)
  • Laura Conover (Pima County, AZ)
  • Steve Descano (Fairfax, VA)
  • Parisa Dehghani-Tafti (Falls Church & Arlington, VA)
  • Stephanie Morales (Portsmouth, VA)
  • Ramin Fatehi (Norfolk, VA)

The formation of this group follows two fatal shootings of protesters by federal agents in Minneapolis earlier this month. On January 7, Renee Good, 37, was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during a confrontation. Subsequently, on January 24, Alex Pretti, also 37, was killed after confronting agents on a Minneapolis street. Video footage appeared to show border patrol agents disarming Pretti, who was carrying a legally owned handgun in a holster, before shooting him multiple times. These incidents have intensified scrutiny of federal enforcement practices. Larry Krasner, District Attorney of Philadelphia, emphasized the coalition’s commitment to accountability, stating, “No agency and no officer is above the law. When federal agents exceed their lawful authority, local prosecutors have both the power and the duty to act.” ([prweb.com](https://www.prweb.com/releases/national-group-of-district-attorneys–prosecutors-come-together-to-push-back-against-federal-overreach-302672930.html?utm_source=openai))

The coalition plans to share strategies and best practices among prosecutors, provide regular public updates on efforts to rein in unlawful federal conduct, educate the public on legally available paths, and coordinate accountability efforts across jurisdictions. This initiative underscores the ongoing tension between local jurisdictions and federal authorities over immigration enforcement and the broader debate on the limits of federal power. As the coalition moves forward, its actions may set significant precedents for the relationship between local and federal law enforcement agencies.
