South Korea’s Former First Lady Sentenced to 20 Months for Bribery in Unification Church Scandal

In a recent decision by the Seoul Central District Court, Kim Keon Hee, the former first lady of South Korea, received a 20-month prison sentence for bribery. The court ruled that Kim accepted luxury gifts such as Chanel bags and a diamond pendant from individuals linked to the Unification Church. These gifts were deemed attempts to gain political favor, despite assertions from the church that they were given without an expectation of reciprocation.

The judiciary, noting Kim’s significant influence over the former president, asserted she exploited her position for personal benefit. Alongside the prison sentence, Kim faces an additional penalty of a 12.8 million won fine and the forfeiture of the diamond necklace involved in the case. More details can be found here.

While guilty of bribery, Kim was acquitted of other serious allegations, including stock manipulation and breaches of the Political Funds Act. The court, citing insufficient evidence, upheld the principle of “In Dubio Pro Reo,” reinforcing that criminal liability must be clearly established. Prosecutors have expressed their intention to challenge these acquittals.

The court’s decision was underlined by the principle “刑無等級 趣物而不兩,” highlighting that the law applies indiscriminately, regardless of an individual’s rank or former power. This ruling is one of several linked to ongoing investigations surrounding former president Yoon Suk Yeol’s declared martial law in 2024, as reported by the Straits Times.
