French prosecutors have delved into the offices of social media platform X in Paris, targeting alleged cybercrimes linked to algorithmic misconduct and other violations. This investigation aims to uncover whether X, along with its executives, engaged in biasing algorithms that could distort data processing and influence users by manipulating information presentation.
The Paris Prosecutor’s Office has highlighted that the investigation extends beyond algorithmic concerns. It also examines serious allegations including complicity in the dissemination of child pornography, misuse of sexual deepfakes for defamation, and Holocaust denial. Furthermore, Elon Musk, the platform’s owner, along with former CEO Linda Yaccarino, has been summoned for hearings to clarify their oversight of these alleged activities and to discuss future compliance strategies. Employees are also expected to testify in these sessions set for April 2026. As an indication of a shift away from X, the Prosecutor’s Office announced its preference for communicating through LinkedIn and Instagram instead here.
This scrutiny is part of a larger probe initiated in January 2025, which initially targeted algorithmic bias and fraudulent practices before expanding to include the actions of X’s AI chatbot, Grok, suspected of spreading Holocaust denial. In fact, X isn’t a stranger to global legal challenges. The European Commission launched an investigation into Grok’s generation of unauthorized sexual imagery, reflecting broader concerns across continents. Additionally, Canadian authorities are examining data privacy breaches related to AI model training, while an Australian court has sanctioned X for insufficient responses to anti-child-abuse inquiries.
These proceedings underscore the escalating challenges tech giants face as they navigate rising scrutiny from international regulators. The case against X illustrates the complex intersection of technology, privacy, and ethics, raising significant questions about corporate responsibility and regulatory oversight in the digital age.
