In a significant development for legal editing software, BriefCatch has acquired WordRake, integrating its core product and technology assets into a single offering. This acquisition consolidates BriefCatch’s position in the legal editing software market by incorporating WordRake’s patented technology, which includes 12 patents related to automated editing software.
BriefCatch, known for its focus on enhancing the clarity and conciseness of legal documents, will now benefit from WordRake’s decade-long expertise and proven editing algorithms. As Ross Guberman, founder of BriefCatch, stated, “WordRake has 12 patents and over a decade of proven editing algorithms. We’re thrilled to build on that substantive foundation rather than reinvent the wheel with another chatbot or UI.”
The acquisition also sees Scott Johns, former CEO of WordRake, joining BriefCatch as a strategic advisor. This move comes at a time when the company is focused on expanding its AI-driven technologies. Last year, BriefCatch released version 4, featuring AI-based enhancements such as Bluebook citation correction and a context-aware writing advisor. Expanding its AI capabilities has been a priority, bolstered by a $6 million Series A funding round intended to accelerate acquisitions and product development.
Since its founding by Gary Kinder, WordRake has stood out in the legal sphere for its automated editing software. Upon acquiring WordRake, Guberman remarked, “Bringing WordRake into BriefCatch decades later feels like the perfect next chapter for us and for legal-writing tech.”
This move aligns with BriefCatch’s mission to provide a comprehensive, integrated AI platform for elite legal writing and editing, aiming at building capabilities that exceed the current offerings of existing editing tools.
