Amnesty Report Exposes Alleged Human Rights Violations by Nigerian Police Unit Tiger Base in Imo State

Amnesty International has released a report detailing severe human rights abuses allegedly committed by a Nigerian police unit known as Tiger Base, tasked with combating kidnapping and armed robbery in Imo State. The report accuses the unit of engaging in unlawful killings, torture, and other forms of mistreatment against detainees.

Individuals held at the facility described appalling conditions, including being kept in overcrowded, unsanitary cells without windows. The cells, each roughly 12 feet by 12 feet in size, reportedly hold over 70 people at a time, forcing them to alternate sitting or squatting on the floor. Amenities are scarce, with only one toilet per cell, often overflowing, leading detainees to live among waste. Amnesty International alleges that many detainees have been detained for extended periods without formal charges, some meeting violent ends or disappearing altogether.

A disturbing case involved the death of Okechukwu Ogbedagu, who was taken to Tiger Base by youth leaders. Three months later, he died in detention, with an autopsy indicating asphyxiation as the cause. In a move described as an attempt to obscure wrongdoing, authorities charged the youth leaders with his murder, holding them for about six months before their release.

Former detainees described torture methods involving beatings with iron rods and cables, as well as the application of knives, machetes, and whips. Some were tied and suspended while being cut, left to bleed, and coerced into signing incriminating statements under duress.

Isa Sanusi, director of Amnesty International Nigeria, commented that Tiger Base exemplifies a wider, systemic issue of Nigerian police acting beyond legal bounds, engaging in extortion and brutality. This situation reflects the broader challenges faced by Nigerian authorities, who have been criticized for their inability to address widespread malpractice, including torture, extrajudicial killings, and extortion, as reported by Premium Times.

Amnesty International has urged Nigerian authorities to initiate a thorough, independent investigation into the alleged abuses committed by Tiger Base personnel. This call for accountability extends to examining the conduct of both the unit’s commander and its officers, seeking justice for those affected.
