While the nine Supreme Court justices often take center stage in public discussions about the United States’ highest court, a diverse and skilled group of professionals functions behind the scenes to ensure the smooth operation of the judiciary. These roles, although not always in the spotlight, are integral to the court’s daily activities.
Among them, the court officers play crucial roles. In addition to the well-known Supreme Court police and marshal, who enforce security and maintain order, there are 11 key administrative staff positions. These positions include the counselor to the chief justice, clerk, librarian, reporter of decisions, court counsel, curator, public information officer, director of information technology, budget director, human resources director, and legislative affairs officer.
The counselor to the chief justice, for instance, is pivotal, assisting the chief justice in administrating the Court and maintaining relationships with other branches of the federal government. Robert M. Dow, Jr. currently holds this position, bringing experience as a United States district judge nominated by President George W. Bush.
Scott S. Harris serves as the clerk of the Supreme Court, overseeing the management of court filings and correspondence. Another notable figure is David S. Mao, the librarian responsible for a vast collection of nearly 650,000 volumes, previously honed at the Library of Congress.
The reporter of decisions, Rebecca A. Womeldorf, is tasked with preparing summaries of the Court’s opinions and supervising their publication. Meanwhile, Court Counsel Ethan V. Torrey provides essential legal support to justices and the organization itself.
The curator, Matthew D. Hofstedt, manages the preservation and sharing of the court’s historical artifacts. Lastly, the public information officer, Patricia McCabe, acts as the court’s official spokesperson, liaising with media and managing the release of orders and opinions.
