Volker Türk, the UN Human Rights Chief, has voiced urgent concerns about the extensive civilian impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. In a recent report, Türk highlighted both direct and indirect consequences of continued military actions, underscoring the pressing need for adherence to international laws meant to protect civilians and critical infrastructure.
Attacks on essential infrastructure not only threaten the immediate region but have ramifications that extend globally. The conflict’s impact is vividly illustrated by the damage reports from the Iranian Red Crescent Society, which reveal that military actions have resulted in over 1,332 fatalities and significant disruptions to transportation, communication systems, and healthcare services.
This situation has prompted a considerable internal displacement crisis, as detailed by the World Health Organization (WHO), estimating over 100,000 displaced individuals in Iran and 700,000 in Lebanon. The destruction of water desalination and fuel facilities has led to oil spills and fires, exacerbating environmental and public health challenges.
The environmental consequences are particularly alarming. Ongoing petroleum fires and debris from the assaults have released toxic pollutants, posing severe health risks. WHO has pointed to the emergence of “black rain,” laden with hazardous compounds, affecting civilians and causing chemical burns and lung damage upon contact.
Beyond the region, the conflict also hinders economic activities and affects migrant workers in the Gulf, jeopardizing commercial shipping in strategically crucial areas like the Strait of Hormuz. This, in turn, impacts global oil markets, illustrating the far-reaching implications of regional instability.
Türk also expressed grave concerns regarding the suppression of freedom of expression, noting instances where individuals face repression for voicing opinions on the conflict.
