The United Nations recently issued a stark warning about a growing mental health crisis affecting children in Palestine, particularly in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The escalation of violence, combined with ongoing displacement, has created an urgent need for mental health and psychosocial support for over one million children in Gaza. The situation poses heightened risks such as increased child marriage, exploitation, and long-term psychological trauma, according to the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).
Sima Alami, an adolescent and youth programme officer with the UNFPA, emphasized the devastating impact of more than two years of relentless conflict on these communities. In March, the UNFPA further detailed how displacement, poverty, and the breakdown of social, legal, and health systems are forcing families into untenable situations. For instance, the resurgence of child marriage is stripping young girls of education and autonomy, while increasing risks of sexual and gender-based violence.
Children’s exposure to ongoing airstrikes, drone surveillance, and the destruction of homes has drastically affected their mental well-being. Besides the psychological toll, the physical loss of family members and the disruption of educational opportunities are precipitating conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These adversities undermine the children’s fundamental rights as enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in particular the rights to health, education, and protection from exploitation.
Despite these grim realities, international agencies like the UNFPA are focusing efforts on supporting Palestinian girls through mental health services, safe spaces, and protection programs designed to mitigate gender-based violence. However, the UN has expressed concerns about continuous unlawful killings and attacks on civilian areas, potentially violating international humanitarian law. This complex humanitarian crisis remains a pressing challenge for global peace and human rights efforts, necessitating urgent and sustained international attention.
As the situation persists, the international community’s response will be crucial in addressing not only immediate needs but also in laying the groundwork for long-term solutions that safeguard children’s rights and futures in Palestine.
