The National Law Journal’s annual NLJ 500 survey provides a comprehensive overview of the largest law firms in the United States, ranked by attorney headcount. The 2026 edition highlights significant trends and shifts within the legal industry, reflecting both growth and strategic realignments among top firms.
Leading the list, Kirkland & Ellis has solidified its position as the largest law firm in New York, boasting 1,133 attorneys—a 17% increase from the previous year. This expansion underscores the firm’s aggressive growth strategy and its commitment to expanding its presence in key markets. Notably, Kirkland is opening a second Manhattan office to accommodate this rapid growth.
Another firm demonstrating remarkable growth is Lippes Mathias, which has steadily advanced over 100 positions in the NLJ 500 over four consecutive years. In 2025, the firm rose to No. 204, up from No. 316 in 2021. This progression is attributed to strategic combinations with firms like CCBLaw and Ward Damon, as well as a consistent influx of lateral hires.
In the Texas market, Kirkland & Ellis has also made significant strides, becoming the first firm to have 500 attorneys operating in the state. This milestone reflects the firm’s strategic focus on expanding its footprint in high-demand regions.
These developments highlight a broader trend of law firms prioritizing growth through strategic mergers, lateral hiring, and geographic expansion to meet the evolving needs of their clients. The NLJ 500 serves as a valuable benchmark for assessing these dynamics within the legal industry.
