The American Bar Association (ABA) has approved the merger between Elon University and Queens University of Charlotte, marking a significant development in the landscape of legal education in North Carolina. This approval paves the way for the establishment of a full-time Juris Doctor (J.D.) program in Charlotte, set to commence in August 2027.
Elon University School of Law will begin accepting applications for this new program on September 1, 2026. The curriculum is designed to mirror Elon Law’s existing full-time program in Greensboro, ensuring consistency and quality in legal education across both campuses. The Charlotte program will be housed on the Queens University campus, providing students with access to comprehensive facilities and resources.
The merger between Elon and Queens was first announced in September 2025, with the goal of creating a dynamic, comprehensive institution that honors the legacies of both universities. In December 2025, the trustees of both institutions approved the definitive legal agreement to effect the merger. This agreement outlined the governance and operational structures to be used while awaiting regulatory approvals, including those from the U.S. Department of Education and accrediting bodies such as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
In March 2026, Elon and Queens submitted a complete merger prospectus to SACSCOC, seeking accreditation approval. The anticipated date for receiving this approval is June 2026, which would initiate the first step of the merger process and allow Elon to become the sole member of Queens. Following this, the institutions will seek approval from the U.S. Department of Education, with the full merger expected to be completed by late 2027 or early 2028.
As part of the integration process, the universities plan to align several administrative and operational functions through shared services, beginning June 30, 2026. This includes areas such as admissions, financial aid, advancement, career services, communications, finance, human resources, information technology, academic advising, facilities, library services, and study abroad programs. The goal is to strengthen the financial and operational foundation of the future combined institution while ensuring that students continue to receive strong support throughout the transition.
Elon University President Connie Ledoux Book emphasized the significance of this merger, stating, “This next stage is about building the foundation for a stronger future. Leaders from both institutions are working collaboratively and deliberately, drawing on the strengths, talents, and traditions of Elon and Queens to design shared functions that serve students well and position the combined institution for long-term success.”
The establishment of the full-time J.D. program in Charlotte reflects the shared strategic importance of the city as a growing center for higher education, professional training, and community engagement. It also illustrates how the merger creates new pathways for academic expansion while strengthening each institution’s presence in the region.
