This collaboration combines Jurisage’s extensive AI-ready legal datasets with Clio’s “Intelligent Legal Work Platform,” an AI-powered suite of tools designed for legal professionals. Clio’s CEO, Jack Newton, hailed Canadian lawyers as forward-thinking in the adoption of AI technologies, emphasizing that this acquisition aims to provide them with a platform that aligns with their ambitions.
The acquisition of Jurisage also sets the stage for the Canadian launch of Clio Work, Clio’s AI-driven platform for legal matter understanding, strategy, and drafting. According to Clio, the availability of reliable Canadian legal data, now provided by Jurisage, was the missing element for the introduction of Clio Work in Canada. Jurisage’s database boasts over 470,000 Canadian cases across more than 40 courts, updated daily, positioning it as a key resource for Clio’s AI expansion.
Jurisage’s current form resulted from a 2023 merger between two Canadian legal tech firms, CiteRight and Jurisage. This merger brought together CiteRight’s litigation drafting expertise with Jurisage’s AI capabilities to create a comprehensive legal research and drafting solution. Ariel Nacson and Aaron Wenner, founders of CiteRight, will continue to be involved, with Wenner leading Canadian Content Strategy at Clio.
Clio’s acquisition appears to be the first step in a long-term commitment to advance legal AI in Canada. Newton expressed pride in making such an investment in their home country, declaring that Clio is constructing the foundation for the future of legal AI in Canada. This development for Clio follows a recent executive promotion, with Ronnie Gurion being elevated to the roles of president and COO earlier this week.
