Bahrain’s High Criminal Court recently convened its initial hearing in a case attracting significant attention due to alleged connections with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The proceedings involve 19 defendants accused of establishing a terrorist organization to destabilize Bahrain’s constitutional framework. Out of the 19 accused, 11 are in custody while 8 remain at large. These accusations are part of broader geopolitical tensions between Bahrain and Iran, marked by longstanding disputes and allegations of interference since Bahrain gained independence in 1971. More recent escalations have occurred after the 1979 Iranian Revolution and during Bahrain’s domestic unrest in 2011, to which Iran has consistently denied involvement.
The prosecution claims the group sought to disrupt the constitutional order by attempting to overthrow institutions and eroding national unity, allegedly using unlawful means to achieve these aims. There are further allegations of exploiting religious gatherings, such as ma’atams and places of worship, to promote ideological opposition to the Bahraini government. This included advocating for political ideologies linked to Iran’s governance framework, Wilayat al-Faqih, which emphasizes the authority of a religious leader over the state.
During the hearing, all defendants denied the charges framed against them. Their arrest was part of a larger crackdown in May involving 41 individuals, of whom some have already received life sentences in related cases of alleged spying and sabotage associated with the IRGC. The next session of the court is slated for July 12, as reported by JURIST.
