Certera.AI: A New Tool Assessing AI Models’ Legal Capabilities Through Blind Comparisons

The burgeoning intersection of technology and law takes another significant step with the launch of Certera.AI, a platform designed to evaluate the effectiveness of AI models in conducting legal work. Developed by the alternative legal services provider Percipient, Certera.AI offers legal professionals a unique opportunity to assess various AI models through blind, head-to-head comparisons. This initiative invites participants to judge AI-generated responses purely on their quality, while concealing the identity of the models to mitigate brand influence on decision-making.

According to reports, the platform allows users to submit legal prompts and compare responses from two different AI models side-by-side. The process remains anonymous until a choice is made, ensuring that evaluators focus squarely on the quality of responses rather than the brand names behind them.

Certera.AI is currently in its beta phase and features a robust lineup of 55 AI models, encompassing offerings from major U.S. labs and international options. Notably, it does not yet include legal-specific or Meta models, although integration of the former is anticipated in future updates. As the platform stands, it focuses on what are known as foundation models that developers can tailor to various tasks.

The evaluation scheme employs the Elo ranking method—a system first used to rank chess players but now adapted for model comparison on platforms like Arena. By using this head-to-head ranking methodology, Certera intends to develop a comprehensive leaderboard that ranks AI model performance in specific legal tasks, with regular updates based on new votes.

Chad Main, Percipient’s founder and CEO, has acknowledged the challenges in reaching consensus on what metrics should determine the best legal AI models. He explains that legal professionals might prioritize elements like the thoroughness of the response or technical correctness, which is why the platform is also collecting data to rank models by different legal fields, such as contract law or litigation.

Despite offering the service free of charge, Percipient aims to derive business value from this venture. The company is exploring avenues to leverage the platform for providing evaluation services to AI companies seeking to test their models in legal contexts. Furthermore, Certera includes anonymity features to strip sensitive information from prompts, although it advises against inputting confidential client data.

The Certera.AI platform’s openness to participation from verified legal professionals will help it accumulate significant amounts of data, with the ultimate goal of providing a trusted resource indicating which AI models excel in specific legal tasks. As Percipient looks to refine and expand its systems, the legal sector can look forward to a potentially valuable tool for navigating the evolving landscape of AI-enabled legal services.
