Relativity Appoints New President Chris Brown Amid Strategic Shift in Legal Data Intelligence

Last week, Relativity announced a significant leadership shift, appointing Chris Brown as the company’s president effective July 13, marking a pivotal moment for the legal data intelligence firm. This strategic rearrangement follows the departure of Chief Marketing Officer Cristina Rossman, after more than six years with the company. Brown, who has served as Chief Product Officer since 2018, will now oversee product organization, marketing, and technology partnerships.

The appointment arrives on the heels of Relativity’s acquisition of the document automation company Gavel, co-founded by Dorna Moini, which strengthens Relativity’s commitment to enhancing “systems of action” for legal workflows. As Brown explained, integrating Gavel’s capabilities aligns with Relativity’s strategy to automate and synchronize work product processes, especially for legal professionals handling complex document management, like redlining and live collaboration within Microsoft Word. Further insights on this strategic purchase can be found in additional documentation and discussions.

Relativity has also recently expanded its AI initiatives by integrating governed Managed Composite Protocol (MCP) solutions, including general-purpose AI assistants like Claude. These integrations are part of a broader strategy to serve diverse user personas working within various interfaces, like Word, and extend RelativityOne’s usability to third-party platforms, thereby augmenting its “AI platform for legal data intelligence.” Brown elaborated that these capabilities facilitate orchestration of matter setups and workflow automation while ensuring data governance and defensibility.

The company’s aiR platform has shown a notable trajectory, with exponential growth in adoption. According to Brown, aiR for Review experiences increasing engagement both in terms of documents processed and workspaces it operates on. However, Brown expresses ambition for further uptake, seeing vast opportunities to enhance AI-driven workflows across the legal sector, particularly in the public sector.

Brown also identified his previous decade-long experience at Orbitz as instrumental in shaping his product development strategy at Relativity. His emphasis on user experience, feedback loops, and strategic marketing funnels inform his leadership approach, echoing methodologies from consumer-facing industries.

This leadership transition and strategic acquisitions aim to propel Relativity’s presence in legal data intelligence and expand its application across litigation, investigations, contracts, and transactional use cases, heralding a transformative period for the company.
