UN Secretary-General António Guterres has recently made a renewed call for dialogues aimed at rebuilding trust between the divided communities of Cyprus. Tensions have been somewhat exacerbated by the European Union’s appointment of a representative for Cyprus at the Greek Cypriots’ request, a move rejected by the Turkish Cypriots who denounced this EU intervention in their domestic matters. The recognition disparity within the EU remains a contentious point, as only the southern Greek Cypriot administration benefits directly from EU membership since Cyprus’s accession in 2004.
