LexisNexis Legal & Professional has announced the launch of its Customer Innovation Lab in New York City, a collaborative environment where legal professionals, company engineers, and AI partners like OpenAI and Amazon Web Services come together to create legal AI solutions in real-time. This initiative aims to reshape how legal AI tools are developed and deployed by involving customers directly in the design and testing process.
The lab introduces a novel approach to customer feedback. Instead of the conventional method, where customer input is followed by lengthy development and iterative feedback rounds, the lab condenses this cycle drastically. As outlined by Greg Dickason, LexisNexis’s Chief Technology Officer, developments in the lab can occur within minutes. This immediacy is achieved by engaging customers and engineers in the same space, allowing for rapid adjustment and live coding.
Prototypes that meet LexisNexis’s standards for quality and security potentially become full-fledged features in their agentic platform. The lab has already led to advancements in Lexis+ with Protégé, including functionalities like the Protégé Vault for multimedia materials and Protégé Workrooms for collaborative case management. These developments stem from direct customer interactions within the lab, allowing for swift adjustments based on real-world applications.
LexisNexis has also set legal drafting as a current top priority, focusing on optimizing document preparation and review processes, which constitute a significant portion of legal professionals’ workloads. The lab’s real-time environment aims to bridge existing gaps in drafting tools, namely those related to firm-specific styles and risk assessments.
