Amnesty International has strongly condemned the recent lethal gang attack in Kenscoff, Haiti, which resulted in at least 47 deaths and left 22 injured. This incident highlights the escalating violence and dire humanitarian situation in Haiti. Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for Research for the Americas, Astrid Valencia, pointed out the tragic reminder of the human toll due to insufficient protective policies, urging Haitian authorities to take decisive action to safeguard the populace (JURIST).
The United Nations also weighed in, describing the grisly scene in the once tranquil area of Kenscoff, where armed assailants set homes ablaze and assaulted residents. On Monday morning, the streets bore witness to the aftermath of one of the region’s most deadly attacks. The situation was further exacerbated by threats from a gang leader, who warned of executing hostages if authorities retaliated against his members.
Haiti’s struggle with rampant gang violence has deep-rooted causes, stemming from the strategy of political leaders leveraging criminal gangs to consolidate their power. This dependence has resulted in these gangs gaining substantial autonomy and influence, sometimes surpassing that of the politicians who empowered them. The violence is compounded by the use of sexual violence as a tactic of terror, serving both as intimidation and a barrier to humanitarian aid.
A United Nations report highlighted that within the span of just three months in 2026, over 1,400 individuals were killed by gangs, alongside 796 documented cases of gang-related sexual violence. This amplifies the severity of Haiti’s humanitarian crisis, now ranked among the world’s most critical (Al Jazeera).
In response to the escalating crisis, Amnesty International has called for “urgent and sustainable measures” from Haitian officials to dismantle the cycle of violence and impunity. The introduction of specialized courts in June marks a notable effort toward addressing the widespread human rights violations in the country.
